College Hoops: Weekend Overreactions

- Louisville is the most bipolar team in the nation: Lose to St. John’s by 19, beat Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. There’s no telling what you’ll get from this team week in and week out. There’s talent, but most of it is inconsistent. The Cards lack of offensive identity at times makes one wonder if they’re even trying. With as much talent as they have on the perimeter and Samardo Samuels on the blocks, the Cards should be able to compete with anyone. The Syracuse win may be enough to get them into the tourney, but don’t expect a lot of noise once they get there.
- Just kidding, Georgetown is the most bipolar team in the nation: In one week during earlier in the month, the Hoyas beat Duke by 22, lost to South Florida at home, and bounced Nova by double digits. The loss to Rugers over the weekend was the biggest head-scratcher of all. This team has too much talent and size to lose games like this.
- A-10 > SEC: It probably comes as a surprise to no one outside of the south; nonetheless, Xavier’s win at Florida only served to cement the fact. Lunardi’s latest Bracketology has the A-10 getting 6 teams in the tourney, while projecting the SEC to land just 3 teams in the big dance. The SEC is probably better at the top (no A-10 team is unseating Kentucky), but there are 7 A-10 teams that could easily finish in the top half of the SEC.
- The Big 12 is overrated: We’re suspicious of teams that don’t have quality win outside of the conference. The Big-12 is chock full of them. What team of note has A&M, Oklahoma State, Mizzou, or Baylor beaten? Don’t worry, we’ll wait. Exactly, we love Kansas and K-State can beat anyone on a given night, but the rest of the conference has more than struggled against out of conference teams with tourney potential.
- The Big Ten is underrated: While only 4 teams in the conference are tournament locks, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Illinois are capable of knocking anyone off on a given night. We expect 5 teams to make the tourney from the conference, with as many as 4 in the Sweet 16.
