Worst weekend for football watching of the year. A lot of that’s on the NFL as well, but the college ranks really did there part to make you wish that you’d taken the significant other to see Couples Retreat. None the less, we know a little bit more about the college football world than we did last week. Here are our off the cuff observations:
- Iowa is out of the BCS title picture. How an undefeated Iowa team with wins over Penn State and Michigan is still ranked behind an LSU squad that needed a bad call to beat Georgia and was a foot away from losing to Mississippi State is beyond me. Does anyone think that the Hawkeyes would really lose on a neutral field to Boise State? Unfortunately for Big Ten fans, a Florida or Bama team that has lost their only game in the SEC Championship to one of the top two teams in the country would face the SEC Champ in a rematch for the BCS title before an undefeated Iowa team got the nod. Would it be a travesty? Yes, but that makes it no less true.
- Cincy and South Florida are being treated like mid-majors. We can see doubting the Bulls, for now, but for three one-loss teams and a mid-major to be ranked ahead of the Bearcats in an absolute outrage. Cincy’s done everything that has been asked of them to date. Also, regardless of what ANYONE else has written, the Big East isn’t a worse conference than the Mountain West or Conference USA. Want to know how the person you’re listening to doesn’t know anything about football? They’ll say that the Big East should be removed from BCS contention for the Mountain West. Sorry for stepping onto our soapbox for a moment there, but it’s just ridiculous how little love these two teams are receiving.
- Stephen Garcia is getting it. In the Gamecocks 4 game winning streak Garcia has thrown 10 td’s and only 1 int. Could the Gamecocks be this year’s Ole Miss? Not sure yet, but it is obvious that Ole Miss isn’t this year’s Ole Miss. We’ll no a lot more about the Cocks over the next 3 weeks.
- We just want to see Crompton do it one more time. Not to take anything away from the Vols dominating win over Georgia, but we just have to see them do it again before we’ll believe that a corner has been turned. It’s not that Jonathan Crompton didn’t look good, it’s that there were a LOT of open receivers running around out there. Hang with Bama and take care of South Carolina and we’ll talk.
- Texas will lose to Oklahoma this weekend. The Horns have let too many teams with dramatically less talent hang with them into the second half of games for us to believe that they posses last season’s killer instinct. Bradford has a game under his belt and Gerald McCoy can single-handedly take over games. This one screams OU to us the way that last season’s matchup looked good for Texas. The Longhorns look soft in their front seven; the first of Will Muschamp’s unit’s that we’ve ever seen with that problem.
