Heisman Beef

DWF15-810076

The Wall Street Journal had an excellent article today about the lack of Heisman trophies won by southern schools. Alabama, which has more national titles than any school other than Notre Dame, has never had a player win the Heisman. We believe that no southern school should have won the Heisman during segregation, and aren’t really upset that Peyton didn’t get the win. That’s on UT for not hyping him at all. Ridiculous as it may sound Berry’s campaign is the first in UT’s history. Woodson had the ESPN hype machine behind him because of their TV deal with the Big Ten at the time as well. The same scenario would never happen today with the WWL’s new deal with the SEC.

  • Doesn't Ole Phil look kind of like Al Franken in that retro-photo? Seriously, well I was being serious, I honestly believe we are going to start seeing more Southern candidates push for the trophy. Is the trophy worth it's weight in whatever it is made out of in our eyes though?

  • Probably not. Look at how few players that have won the award actually amount to anything at the next level. The SEC's new media policy has me a little apprehensive to proclaim the end of the southern heisman drought. If they alienate the blogosphere, they'll have a NASCAR like fall regardless of how many games are covered.

  • Ole Phil needs to look again since ALABAMA certainly did have a candidate win the Heisman tropy this year. He needs to update his material.
