Meet The Next Eric Berry

Greg Reid

Everybody is talking today about the thrilling Miami victory over Florida State on Monday night. Miami was led by sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris. The young quarterback threw for 387 yards while scoring three touchdowns in the 38-34 win over the Seminoles. Harris has a bright future, but there was one player on the Seminoles that will be one of the best defensive players in the nation next season. This defensive back has all the tools to be the next Eric Berry.

Like Berry, Greg Reid was a highly ranked defensive back that many schools wanted to sign. Also like Berry, Reid is an athlete that could line up at many positions. In his first ever college game, Reid had four tackles, one interception, one massive hit and a 51-yard kick return. ACC fans should be very concerned that Reid and Harris are this young and both will be big reasons why the future looks bright for both teams. The Seminoles have a great history of star defensive backs like Deion Sanders and Terrell Buckley. Patrick Robinson was supposed to be the next great cornerback after intercepting six passes in 2007, but Robinson struggled last season. Robinson is a very fast corner, but he routinely relies on his speed too much.

Reid was once committed to Florida and it is scary to think how good Florida’s defense would be this season if Reid was playing for the Gators. Reid is a hart-hitting safety that will make sure his impact is felt by opposing receivers and running backs. Even though he is only a freshman, Reid will be the main reason Florida State’s defense leads the Seminoles to a good bowl this season. The Seminoles don’t have the talent to make a BCS run this season, but if Bobby Bowden continues to recruit more talent to this Florida State defense, the Seminoles will be headed in the right direction. Many Tennessee fans think Eric Berry has a chance to win the Heisman Trophy this season and you will hear Florida State fans say the same think the next couple of years. Reid is not even old enough to drink, but many Florida State fans will be celebrating next season when Reid is an All-American. Expect Reid to have at least one touchdown as a kick returner and don’t be surprised if he starts piling up the interceptions as the season goes on. With Berry probably leaving for the NFL at the end of the season, expect Berry to pass the torch to Reid as the best defensive back in college football. Did I mention that both played high school football in the great state of Georgia?
