RIP Phillip Fulmer’s Coaching Career

If you saw Jamey’s post about Phillip Fulmer speaking at the Daytona QB Club you were probably left with a bad taste in your mouth. Phillip Fulmer is bitter. Try as he may to hide it, the man had his feelings hurt.

That’s life, though. People get fired. Most aren’t given a $6 million golden parachute to help soften the blow, either. Nevertheless, we rather empathize with Fulmer.

He had a very nice run and was a great ambassador for his university. He truly loved UT. It had to hurt when the fan base and administration turned on him, even if it was deservedly so.

However, that’s not what has really be sticking in his crawl. Phillip Fulmer is upset because he is finished as a major college football coach.

Every loss that Lane Kiffin and his staff endure this season will only more glaringly show the state in which Fulmer left his program. Add to that the immediate success that Dave Clawson is having as the head coach at Bowling Green and it becomes more obvious that the problem was Phillip Fulmer and only Phillip Fulmer.

What school will hire a bitter coach in his twilight years that left his program a mess and handcuffed an offensive genius that would have saved his job given the opportunity?

It is one thing to misevaluate in the recruiting process. It’s another to hire the wrong coordinator to run your offense. It is a completely different matter, however, to hire the right coordinator and not realize it because you just don't get it any more.

If he is willing to say the tough things, Phillip Fulmer will make a heck of a broadcaster. He’d better, it’s the only way that he can stay around the game.
