MLB Headlines (John Smoltz is Done)

John Smoltz

Frank Wren deserves an apology: Where are all the "experts" and analysts that ripped Atlanta Braves GM Frank Wren when he decided not to re-sign pitchers John Smoltz and Tom Glavine? Smoltz and Glavine are a combined 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA this season. (Hint: Glavine hasn't pitched all season.) Smoltz might be done forever after being designated for assignment and it is a shame that this HKS favorite didn't know when to give it up. [AJC]

What team claimed Alex Rios: The overpaid Toronto Blue Jays outfielder was claimed on waivers by an unknown team. The Blue Jays can now try to get something in return for Rios.  According to league sources, the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets all are not the team that claimed the Blue Jays outfielder. [MLB Trade Rumors] Rios would be a good fit for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers. Our money is on the Red Sox.

Yankees put Cano on waivers, Yanks expected to keep him: It probably will amount to nothing, but the New York Yankees put second baseman Robinson Cano on waivers. If he clears waivers today, he is eligible to be dealt or the Yanks can decide to keep him. Cano is batting .309 and playing solid defense on the season. [NY Post]

Is Giambi done?: Oakland Athletics first baseman Jason Giambi was released by the Athletics after batting just .192 on the season - the lowest in the majors. Giambi has been on the disabled list since July 20 with a strained right quadriceps muscle. [SI] He has never been the same since he got off the juice.
