David Ortiz and Major League Baseball Struck Out Today

Bud Selig David Ortiz

Big Papi and Major League Baseball both had a chance today to accept responsibility and both failed. Ortiz held a press conference today and said he never bought or used a steroid. Do you believe him? I don’t. I didn’t believe former Texas Rangers first baseman Rafael Palmeiro when he said his positive drug test was the result of a tainted B-12 shot. Former Chicago Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa forgot how to speak English when he was forced to testify in front of Congress. Do you see a pattern here? It is one thing for the players to lie to our faces, but for Major League Baseball to give us false information is a completely different ball game.

News came out today from Major League Baseball that the list of 104 players may include at least eight people who did not test positive for steroids. Confused? Some of the 96 positive tests were contested by the player’s union. This second part doesn’t bother me, because the player’s union contests almost everything that their players are involved in. That is their job and I don’t have a problem with that.

Here is another question that bothers me: Why come out with this information now? Are you telling me that Major League Baseball just found out this information? There is no way that is the case, just like there is no way Major League Baseball would make this announcement if a player on the Pittsburgh Pirates was busted for steroids. I am never one of those off-the-wall conspiracy theorists but this one just screams foul play. I expect nothing less from MLB commissioner Bud “I Must Interview Well” Selig. Some players and fans might ridicule me for this opinion, but I am done giving Major League Baseball players or Selig the benefit of the doubt. Baseball had a chance today to admit that Ortiz took something that was banned and move on. Instead, tell us that there might be at least eight players who did not test positive for steroids. The only thing that will make up for this is if Major League Baseball comes out tomorrow with breaking news that their commissioner never tested positive for intelligence and it is time to make a change.

  • Ortiz is a really sad story right now. If you didn't take any steroids and your going to deny doing it, why does it take you 5 days to prepare after the story is released, when you were asked so many times before then and had "no comment". A-Rod took the right road even though the whole truth wasn't revealed. These players know the list of supplements they used, and shoudl release that to the media, and maybe even earna few bucks promoting some companies products.
