Knox and Bonds

Roy Halladay

Knox and Bonds is the market watch here at the HKS. You can find it here every Saturday morning.

1)    Buy or Sell the Matt Holliday trade separating the Cards from the pack in the NL Central:

Jamey: Buy. I love this trade for St. Louis. It scares when a team trades away their farm system for a rental like Holliday. Maybe the Cardinals will re-sign him before he becomes a free agent, but Holliday is a great bat to have behind Albert Pujols. Brett Wallace is supposed to be a stud prospect so we will see if he pans out for Oakland. The interesting part is that the Cardinals are still the third best team in the N.L. behind the Phillies and Dodgers.

Will: Buy. I don’t think that this deal could have gone any better for St. Louis. Holliday has post-season experience and forces teams to pitch to Albert Pujols. LaRussa adds a nice veteran presense to his clubhouse as well. The Cardinals bats were struggling, they won’t be any more. Move of the year so far.

2)The Blazers made the right move bringing in Andre Miller at the point:

Jamey: Buy Buy Buy. Andre Miller is a very good point guard that the average NBA fan never mentions. He averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 assists last season. Those assists will go up playing with Brandon Roy. Our boy Rudy Fernandez keeps losing minutes and will not be happy. That groan you just heard was from New York Knicks fans. Can Spike Lee support another year with Chris Duhon running the point?

Will: Buy. It was a good move(especially for the money), but Miller wasn’t the ideal guy for this team. Kind of wish that they’d brought in more of an off the ball guy, but still, Miller is a major upgrade over Steve Blake at the point.

3)Roger Goodell’s making the right decision suspending Michael Vick for the reported 4 games:

Jamey: Sell. Vick SHOULD NOT be suspended one game or even one down. He served his time in jail, which many people thought was too much. What he did was horrible, but look how many NFL players harm humans and they barely get suspended. Goodell made a big mistake on this one.

Will: Buy. Technically I’m buying, but there’s no way in my mind that one can justify punishing Mike Vick anymore. He’s had his life decimated by this, what else do people want? The problem is that Goodell knows that he HAS to suspend Vick to appease the masses. Four games is enough time for a team to tell their fan base that Vick, “Paid his debt and served his suspension”. Unfortunately there wouldn’t have been nearly as many teams come to the table without a suspension.

4)Steve Spurrier told the truth when explaining how he didn’t vote Tim Tebow the SEC’s 1st team QB.

Jamey: Sell. This one is interesting. Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said he had some of his staff help him with his SEC ballot because he wanted input from people that had been in the SEC longer than him. I find it hard to believe that Spurrier didn't know this was going on. This is the same guy that thinks it is funny to vote Duke in the top 25 every year. Look for Florida to put up 40+ against South Carolina this year.

Will: Sell. There’s little chance that the OBC didn’t check up on his Dir. Of Football Operations to ensure that an appropriate amount of Gamecocks were selected. He would have noticed the mistake.

5)Acquiring Roy Halladay would make the Phillies the favorite to win the World Series.

Jamey: Buy. When healthy, Halladay is the best pitcher in the majors. You put him with the Phillies hitters and that team is dirty. Brad Lidge's high ERA is a concern. Phillies fans need Cole Hammels' 4.66 ERA to go down but I think they are the favorites. Imagine Halladay pitching three games in a seven-game World Series. Remember he is also signed for next season so could we have back-to-back-to-back champs?

Will: Sell. Halladay’s not going to be enough. The Red Sox and Dodgers are both much better teams than they were last year and adding one arm isn’t going to matter if Hamels doesn’t come around. Giving up Happ in a deal for Doc would still leave the team with only 2 legit post-season starters. This team needs to keep Happ and make a deal for an inning eater and bullpen help. A Halladay deal reminds me of the Mets acquiring Johan Santana. Great to have the starter, but if the pen can’t hold a lead it really doesn’t matter.
