Pat Summitt is a Better Coach than Bill Belichick?

I have nothing against Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt, in fact she is one of the coaches in all of sports that I respect the most. She has always given me the time of day and one has to respect her accomplishments. The problem I have is when people start saying Summitt is a better coach than Mike Krzyzewski, Bill Belichick, Adolph Rupp, Pat Riley and many other coaches that should be ranked higher than her. Summitt was ranked the eleventh best coach of all time with John Wooden, Vince Lombardi and Bear Bryant rounding out the top three. [Sporting News]

The Sporting News poll consisted of 118 Hall of Famers, championship coaches and coaches that will never be successful ever in their careers. What do I mean by this? Look at some of these “experts”: Tom Cable (will be fired during the season), Romeo Crennel (I must interview well), Mike Dubose (was Mike Price not available?) and Ned Yost (somebody hire me, please!). I understand the concept of asking coaches and players to vote because they were closer to the game than journalists. I just find it hard to belive that Crennell and Dubose watch that many Lady Vols games to consider Summitt a better coach than Bobby Knight or Bill Belichick.

Summitt’s eight national championships and 1,005 wins will be hard to accomplish ever again in any form of college basketball. Nobody can convince me that winning eight championships in women’s basketball is a bigger accomplishments that winning three national titles in men’s basketball or winning two Super Bowl Rings. If I haven’t convinced you yet that this is ridiculous, here are more names that were ranked below Summitt: Paul Brown, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Joe Gibbs, Joe Torre and Bill Parcells. Summitt is a class act and deserves to be mentioned as one of the 50 best coaches ever, but she is not one of the 11 best coaches of all time. If Bobby Bowden ends up getting all his wins vacated at Florida St, he obviously needs to drop below her on the list.
