The Denver Broncos did not bring star wide receiver Brandon Marshall on their trip to Seattle to play the Seattle Seahawks. If you combine this with the dumb decision of Broncos coach Josh McDaniels to work Marshall on the scout team, it looks like Marshall will get traded at some point this season. Here are the teams that we think should trade for Marshall:
- Chicago Bears:
- The Bears were a popular pick to win the NFC North before the Minnesota Vikings signed Brett Favre. Many people still are picking the Bears to make the playoffs, but we think Jay Cutler needs another weapon on offense. Bears running back Matt Forte is one of the five best running backs in the NFL and Forte should make a very dangerous duo with Cutler. Rashied Davis and Devin Hester are the starting receivers for the Bears and neither has a season with 1,000 receiving yards. We expect former Vanderbilt wide receiver Earl Bennett to have a breakout season. If the Bears trade for Marshall, they will go from competing to win the NFC North to competing to win a Super Bowl.
- New York Giants
- Tom Coughlin might not want to add another receiver with a checkered past after dealing with Plaxico Burress last season. The Giants drafted UNC wide receiver Hakeem Nicks in the first round of the NFL Draft. Nicks has very good hands and had shown flashes so far in the preseason. If Coughlin doesn’t like what he sees in starters Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon, this could be a perfect mix for the Giants. Fans of the Giants need to realize that their young receivers have potential, but there is not one receiver on the roster that had 600 yards last season.
- New York Jets
- If I am the Jets psychiatrist, I am not recommending this move as Rex Ryan and Marshall would be a very destructive pair for this team. General manager Mike Tannenbaum shouldn’t care about pleasing his immature coach and should focus on adding talent to this roster. Brett Favre was a big reason why Jets receivers did anything last season, but the fact remains that there is not one receiver on this roster that had 900 yards last season. If you combine Marshall with running backs Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shon Greene, this is a team that would make the playoffs. Mark Sanchez might have a good rookie season, but he doesn’t have a lot of talent at the receiver position.
- Jacksonville Jaguars
- This is a team that has the talent to make a surprise playoff run. The problem is that Jack Del Rio is slowly losing this team as he has clashed with many veterans on this team. The Jaguars coach is on the hot set and he could use another receiver on this team. We like the addition of Torry Holt to this offense. He is past his prime, but could have a bounce back season as there were only two season with the St. Louis Rams that Holt didn’t have over 1,1,00 yards. Mike Walker and Troy Williamson are mediocre receivers, but we do like rookie Jarett Dillard. Quarterback David Garrard could possibly reach 4,000 this season with the addition of a receiver like Marshall.
- Baltimore Ravens
- We expect second-year running back Ray Rice to have a huge season this year and the Ravens should make it back to the playoffs. Joe Flacco might have a sophomore slump this season, but Rice and Ray Lewis should help lead them back to the playoffs. If the Ravens want to get back to the Super Bowl, they need more talent on offense. Derrick Mason pulled a Favre and supposedly was ready to retire and then came back to the Ravens. Mason had a very good season last year with 1,037 yards, but we would be shocked if he does this again this season. Mark Clayton has never lived up to the expectations of being a first round draft pick and Demetrius Williams and Yamon Figurs are not great options for Flacco. This team would be very dangerous with Marshall.
- Houston Texans
- Some people think that this is finally the season that the Houston Texans make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Gary Kubiak could possible be on the hot seat if this team doesn’t make the playoffs. The Texans already have one of the best receivers in the NFL in Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter had 899 yards last season. Walter is a good receiver, but the trio of Johnson, Marshall and Walter would help lead the Texans to the playoffs. Johnson and Marshall would pass Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldon as the best pair of wide receivers in the NFL.
- Carolina Panthers
- Steve Smith is still one of the best receivers in the NFL and had a strong season last year with 1,421 yards and six touchdowns after being suspended the first two games for going Tom Cable on a teammate. Muhsin Muhammad had a very strong season in his return to the Panthers, but he is on the downside of his career. Dwayne Jarrett should learn from Chad Ochocinco and legally change his name to Dwayne Bust as he has never lived up to expectations. The Panthers are already a strong team with running back DeAngelo Williams leading the way, but they play in a division that we expect to produce two playoff teams in the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. Smith, Marshall and Williams would form one of the best trios in the NFL and might make the Panthers the number one seed in the NFC.
