The Tennessee Titans have had one of the best backfields in the NFL since Jeff Fisher has been their head coach. Last season the Titans averaged 116 yards per game, ranking third behind the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. Running backs Chris Johnson and LenDale White form one of the best backfield duos in the NFL. Is it possible that the Titans have a third running back that will give them a dangerous third option?
Just like they do every year, the Titans had another strong draft. I was not a huge fan of the Titans drafting Rutgers wide receiver Kenny Britt in the first round this season but many people ripped the Titans last season for drafting Chris Johnson and he proved doubters wrong by rushing for 1,228 yards and scoring nine touchdowns as a rookie. The Titans best value pick was drafting Michigan St. running back Javon Ringer with the 37th pick in the fifth round.
Ringer rushed for 1,637 yards and 22 touchdowns in his senior season at MSU. He also had 28 catches on the season. The former Spartan is a tough runner that had a very productive career at MSU. He is currently listed at 5’9, 205lbs but after a couple of years in the league, Ringer should be able to bulk up and become a very good goal-line back. LenDale White is one of the best short yardage backs in the league and is a beast of a man at 235lbs. Now people are wondering if White has lost too much weight in the offseason. He was tied for third in the NFL with 15 touchdowns but those touchdowns came with issues. White has struggled with weight issues in the past and has admitted to not caring and losing focus during games. Titans fans should be excited for two reasons: If White screws up sometime in the next two seasons they could trade him and promote Ringer or if White behaves the Titans will have one very dangerous three headed monster in their backfield. Fisher should love this problem and the Titans running game should continue to succeed for many years to come.
