Training camps are opening all over the league, and with Favre’s decision out of the way, here are the five biggest storylines heading into the season:
1) Where and when will Mike Vick land? As many as 18 teams have already gone on record saying that they aren’t interested in Vick. San Fran and Jacksonville were two of those to say ‘thanks but no thanks” that we’d heard might be in play for Vick. Vick’s going to sign with a team sooner rather than later. It’s just a matter of some team showing up to the party first.
2) How will Tom Brady’s injured knee hold up and do the Pats have enough defense for it to matter? New England did draft their replacement for Rodney Harrison in Oregon’s Patrick Chung, but that may not be enough. A secondary consisting of an aging Shawn Springs, a rookie at the other corner with Brandon Merriweather and Chung at the safety positions will leave opposing offensive coordinators salivating to get a shot at the Pats. There should be enough offense here to win the division, but how do they stop a healthy San Diego or the South and North division winners?
3) Can TO keep his head together in Buffalo? It is going to happen. There’s going to be a close game against a division rival that the Bills lose where Lee Evans gets more looks than 81. Has Terrell learned his lesson or will he napalm the locker room?
4) Has the window closed on the Colts? There was a little drama in the offseason, the offensive line is patch work at best, the defense is under sized, and Marvin Harrison’s not walking through that door. Is this the beginning of the end for Peyton?
5) Who avoids the injury bug in the NFC? You could make a compelling argument that every team but the Skins, Lions, Bucs, and Rams have a chance to take the crown in their respective divisions. It’s going to come down to who can stay the healthiest.
