The Double-Stuffed Oreo Licking Champions might as well buy the Oreo brand after Eli Manning’s latest contract. The New York Giants quarterback signed a new six-year, $97 million contract extension that will make him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL with an average salary of $15.3 million. [ESPN] San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning could all receive raises sometime in the near future. The real question is: Will Eli win another Super Bowl ring before Peyton or will neither win another Super Bowl ring?
Peyton Manning is by far the better quarterback, but the window of opportunity for the Colts might have already closed the past couple of years. The Colts made a very smart decision by drafting former Connecticut running back Donald Brown with their first round pick. The small back has great break away speed and will be a very reliable back if Joseph Addai gets injured or struggles. Peyton should have a better running game this season, but will we ever see the same offense that Peyton set records with when he had Marvin Harrison in his prime? I will be shocked if Peyton ever gets back to that level with Anthony Gonzalez as a number two receiver. Fourth-round draft pick Austin Collie was a steal that late in the draft and should spread the field for the former University of Tennessee quarterback.
Eli lost some offense in the offseason and his defense added plenty of help. Change of pace back Derrick Ward left the Giants to be the man in Tampa Bay. His replacement, Ahmad Bradshaw, has yet to reach 400 yards in one season in his two-year NFL career. Bradshaw might double this now that he is getting more carries, but will he be as consistent as Ward was last season? Brandon Jacobs is an HKS favorite and should have another monster season if he stays healthy. The Giants already have first-round pick Hakeem Nicks signed and he should add some offense. He is a very talented receiver that has some nice You Tube catches. The Giants need for him to become that threat in the end zone that Plaxico Burress was when Eli led the Giants to a Super Bowl win.
There is a chance that neither one of these brothers wins a Super Bowl ring again because they play in tough divisions. The Giants have to play six games against the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles could make a Super Bowl run this season, the Redskins should be improved with Albert Haynesworth and the Cowboys will be improved once they fire Wade Phillips and bring in Bill Cowher next season. The Colts have to play the Titans twice and many people think the Houston Texans are on the verge of becoming a playoff team. That won’t happen this season, but Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson can be quite the nightmare for defenses around the league. If I were a betting man (you bet against Rocky in Rocky III?) I am betting all my money that Eli will win another Super Bowl ring before Peyton. I also want to thank both brothers for ruining Oreo cookies for me and I hope I never see that video ever again.
