Women’s rugby team celebrates first OUA title, gets set for nationals

The McMaster women’s rugby team will face a familiar foe to start the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women’s rugby championship, which gets underway this week in Guelph.

Entering the tournament as the second seed, the Marauders will open their schedule against the host Guelph Gryphons, who they defeated 19-10 last Saturday to capture the first OUA title in team history.

The six teams that will compete for the Monilex Trophy include McMaster, Guelph, the University of Alberta, the University of Ottawa, St. Francis Xavier University and Western University.

The tournament, organized by the University of Guelph for the second time in its history, begins Thursday and culminates Sunday with the national final at 2 p.m. All nine games in the competition will be broadcast live on the web at CIS-SIC.tv.

McMaster, Guelph and Ottawa will compete in Group B at the national championship tournament, while Alberta, StFX and Western will compete in Group A.

The top teams at the end of the first round will go to the final. Teams finishing in second place will face-off for the bronze.

McMaster will square off against Guelph on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. Click here for the full schedule of games.
